The Russian Foreign Ministry: Rejecting Ukraine's accession to the treaty is not enough, NATO has to give up its 2008 commitments

Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said Tuesday that < b > Russia is demanding that NATO abandon its 2008 commitment that "one day" it would make Ukraine a member of the U.S.-led military alliance. She said it would be unacceptable for Russia to let Ukraine join NATO, but it would not be enough for Russia to simply deny Ukraine membership. "It is worth noting that it is not enough to deny Kiev membership in NATO," Zakharova said. "NATO must deny the commitments made at the Bucharest [summit] in 2008." < b > In April 2008, at a summit in Bucharest, NATO announced that both Ukraine and Georgia would join the U.S.-led defense alliance, but gave no plans on how.
