The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a budget plan that sets the stage for an extension of Trump's 2017 tax cuts, despite the fact that all Democrats, as well as two Republicans who feared insufficient spending cuts, voted against it. The House passed the budget with 216 votes in favor and 214 against, a preliminary but necessary result. It would allow Republicans to bypass Democratic opposition and pass tax cuts later this year along partisan lines. Republicans will craft those tax cuts in the coming months. The legislation passed Thursday amounts to a broad budget blueprint with few details. With the passage of the budget, the next package would cut taxes by up to $5.30 trillion over a decade and raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion in exchange for $4 billion in spending cuts. U.S. House Speaker Johnson had hoped to pass the bill on Wednesday, but delayed action as some Republicans objected that it would not cut enough.
