On May 6th, Bitcoin Core developers have decided to remove the restrictions on transaction data in the next network upgrade, so as to be able to include more data in a more efficient way. Bitcoin developer Greg Sanders posted an announcement on GitHub on May 5th saying: "The next version of Bitcoin Core will default to relay and mine OP_RETURN output transactions over 80 bytes and allow any number of outputs." In response, critics say the proposal was proposed without a proper consensus process. Ten31 Fund managing partner Marty Bent said: "There is currently no consensus on OP_RETURN issues." OP_RETURN transaction outputs, which allow small amounts of data to be stored on the blockchain, reportedly became popular during the Bitcoin ordinal boom in early 2024. Unlike regular transaction outputs, OP_RETURN outputs are not spendable and do not increase unspent transaction outputs (UTXO). (Cointelegraph)
