The Federal Railroad Administration, the nation's railroad governing body, has brought in the Boring Company, a tunneling company founded by Musk, to assist with a multibillion-dollar Amtrak project to build a new tunnel along a busy stretch of road between Baltimore, Washington and Virginia, according to three people familiar with the matter. Amtrak originally expected the project to cost $6 billion, but now estimates it could be as high as $8.50 billion. As part of the talks, U.S. Department of Transportation officials, who oversee the Federal Railroad Administration, met with Boring Company employees last month and were told the company could find ways to build the tunnel more economically and efficiently, according to two people familiar with the matter.
