According to the Hong Kong Wen Wei Po, officers of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police, China, received a report in September 2022 that the virtual currency account of a Singapore fintech company was stolen by a 29-year-old male employee of the Hong Kong branch. More than 3.20 million virtual currencies with a market value of about HK $26 million were stolen. Subsequent investigation revealed that the employee stole the batch of virtual currencies 64 times between November 2021 and July 2022, and transferred the money to electronic wallets on different trading platforms. Some wallets were held by a 29-year-old woman and another 26-year-old man. On September 9, 2022, officers arrested the two men and one woman on suspicion of "theft" and "money laundering", and recovered about $8.60 million worth of virtual currency and $4.65 million in cash and assets during the operation. Subsequently, the male employee was charged with one count of "theft" and three counts of "money laundering". He pleaded guilty and was convicted in the High Court. As of today (15th), he was sentenced to a total of 6 years and 6 months in prison for the above offences.
