US President Donald Trump said on May 26 that the European Union had requested an extension of the window for trade talks and had agreed to extend the deadline until July 9. Last week Trump said he would impose a 50% tariff on European Union imports from June 1. This comes after European Union Commission President von der Leyen said on Sunday after a phone call with Trump that the European Union was ready to move forward with trade talks with the United States "quickly and decisively", but that Trump would need to return to his original 90-day negotiation period. This is the first time the two leaders have publicly disclosed the call since Trump took office. Two days earlier, Mr. Trump said he would impose a 50 per cent tariff on European Union imports from June 1. In April, Mr. Trump suspended the 20 per cent tariffs he had initially imposed on the European Union to begin a 90-day window for talks that had been set to end on July 9. Ms von der Leyen's office confirmed she had reached out to Mr. Trump. Ms von der Leyen's comments suggest the European Commission could shift its position in favour of pursuing a potential compromise.
