According to Cointelegraph, Roman Storm, the co-founder and developer of the Tornado Cash cryptocurrency mixing service, is due to appear in a New York court on July 14 to face money laundering and conspiracy charges.
With less than two weeks to go before the US criminal trial, Storm said in a video interview that his legal team intends to resolve allegations at trial that he personally profited from illicit funds through his role at Tornado Cash. However, he declined to say whether he would testify in his defence, saying there is "no 100 per cent answer yet" on the charges of money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transfer agency and conspiracy to violate US sanctions. "I may or may not [testify]".
Storm has been prosecuted by U.S. authorities since 2023, about a year after the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned addresses linked to Tornado Cash. Government entities said the hybrid service facilitated the laundering of cryptocurrencies stolen by North Korean hackers.
