A Kansas City grand jury indicted North Korean national Lim Jung-hyuk, accusing him of participating in a ransomware attack plot targeting U.S. hospitals and medical facilities. The group laundered cryptocurrency proceeds and used the funds to further cyber-intrusions into defense, technology, and government entities worldwide. The ransomware attacks disrupted patient care and were part of a broader operation by the hacking group "Andariel", which is linked to North Korea's Reconnaissance General Directorate. The Justice Department, FBI, and international partners have taken action to stop these activities, including seizing $114,000 in cryptocurrency linked to North Korean ransomware and intercepting malicious software. The FBI also seized $500,000 in virtual currency from previous ransomware attacks. In addition, the State Department announced a $10 million reward for information leading to the capture of Lim. The indictment underscores a commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and holding cyber actors accountable.
